Rising into the night sky, 12,000 drones transformed the heavens into a canvas and light into a brush, painting iconic symbols such as the “Dedicated Ox” and the “Heart of Shenzhen.”
To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, at 8:26 PM on August 26th, a grand drone light show commenced simultaneously at both main venues: Shenzhen Civic Square and Shenzhen Talent Park.

At Talent Park, the “Future Window” tech show transformed drones into captivating displays including the phrase “Amazing Shenzhen,” the evolving “Space Ring” of landmark architecture, and names of Shenzhen enterprises alongside the pulsating “Heart of Shenzhen” imagery – all vividly showcasing the city’s dynamism and innovative spirit. Meanwhile, at Civic Square, the “Path of Reform” themed performance unfolded through chapters like “Winds Blowing over the South China Sea” and “Scaling New Heights,” paying tribute to the special economic zone’s journey from humble beginnings to pioneering achievements.
The audience responded with palpable excitement. Ms. Kuang, who specially traveled from Hunan province, marveled: “No video or live stream can capture even 0.01% of the live experience!” She had secured her spot through advance booking after persistent efforts. Local resident Mr. Lin voiced the collective pride saying: “A performance of this scale fills us with both joy and immense pride!”

The visual spectacle was powered by cutting-edge drone technology. This event not only marked the world’s first dual-matrix, 10,000-drone synchronized flight performance but also utilized a “1+2+N” model to coordinate 16 light show venues across the city, creating a grand “citywide stage” effect.
“Behind the dazzling drone formation displays lies a precise industrial process from artistic conception to technical execution,” explained Qin Haiquan, Deputy General Manager and Head of the Technical Support Department at Shenzhen Damaoda Intelligent Control Technology Co., Ltd. “It all begins with the design phase, where designers use specialized software to transform creative ideas into dot matrix diagrams – each drone becoming a luminous pixel in the sky, ensuring precise visual effects.”

Of course, to achieve more creative three-dimensional dynamic formations, the team also engages in 3D modeling and employs specialized animation software to achieve seamless transitions. These individual patterns, models, and animations are then choreographed into a complete “performance script.”
“The most technically demanding aspect is route planning,” Qin explained. “This involves using complex algorithms to automatically calculate optimal paths for tens of thousands of drones to transition safely and efficiently from one formation to the next. The algorithm’s core function is to prevent collisions between any two drones during these intricate transformations while simultaneously meeting strict engineering parameters like speed and acceleration.”
Qin highlighted three core technologies enabling this achievement: Communication systems that maintain stable, uninterrupted connections between all drones and the ground control station, ensuring synchronized command reception Advanced intelligent algorithms that enable global coordination and collision avoidance High-precision positioning technology – whereas early GPS-dependent systems offered only 2-meter accuracy requiring 5-meter safety distances (resulting in loose formations), current centimeter-level technologies like RTK have reduced drone spacing to 1.4-1.5 meters, enabling unprecedented visual precision.

“For Shenzhen’s performance, we extended the drone show from the originally planned 15 minutes to 30 minutes, allowing citizens to enjoy a truly immersive experience,” Qin Haiquan revealed. Given the current limitations in single-drone battery endurance, the team developed a multi-echelon relay solution – essentially “using quantity to buy time.” For instance, the 6,000 drones were divided into several groups. The first echelon would take off and perform, followed by the second echelon taking over while the first returned to land, then the third echelon would ascend – creating what resembled an “aerial relay race.”
The spectacular performance significantly boosted local tourism and cultural sectors. Preliminary statistics show that on the day of the event, Shenzhen’s cultural and tourism consumption exceeded 1.2 billion yuan, with commercial district foot traffic increasing 30% year-over-year and international visitor numbers growing 15%. All these figures surpassed the data recorded during last year’s National Day holiday drone performance featuring 10,000 drones.

“We innovatively integrated ‘spectacle viewing with consumption’ through cross-sector and interdepartmental collaboration, implementing coordinated measures to stimulate spending and unlock new economic vitality,” stated Zhang Qi, Director of the Tourism Promotion Division at Shenzhen’s Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism, and Sports Bureau.
Centered around the drone light show, Shenzhen has curated comprehensive experiences linking dining, accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, shopping, and entertainment. The Bureau coordinated with over 80 hotels to launch promotional activities under the “Shenzhen Summer Surprises” campaign. Futian District integrated ten major commercial zones to roll out the “Mellow Futian” themed promotions, enabling seamless enjoyment of cross-venue discounts through a single code. Meanwhile, Nanshan District distributed 100 million yuan in tourism subsidies and partnered with Nanshan Museum to offer “stay discounts for exhibition visitors,” effectively converting audience members into consumers.
